Review by Ddungu James

The Legendary Guild And Musicraft Sides by Dizzy Gillespie is a must-have for jazz enthusiasts. The album is a compilation of Gillespie's recordings for the Guild and Musicraft labels, featuring some of his most memorable performances from the 1940s. The tracks showcase Gillespie's virtuosity on the trumpet, his innovative improvisational style, and his ability to lead a band.

The album opens with the upbeat and energetic "Groovin' High," which quickly sets the tone for the rest of the album. Gillespie's solo is both dazzling and soulful, and the rhythm section provides a solid foundation for his improvisation. Other standout tracks include "Salt Peanuts," "Oop Bop Sh'Bam," and "Shaw 'Nuff," all of which feature Gillespie's signature bebop style.

One of the highlights of the album is the inclusion of several tracks with vocalist Sarah Vaughan. Their collaboration on "Lover Man" is particularly noteworthy, with Gillespie's trumpet complementing Vaughan's smooth vocals perfectly. The album also features several tracks with saxophonist Charlie Parker, including "Koko" and "Confirmation," which showcase the two musicians' incredible chemistry and improvisational skills.

That's Leroy Eliot "Slam" Stewart on double bass with his trademark style using a bow on the bass and simultaneously humming an octave higher. Brilliant!
