- "The original 3 track tapes of this session have been remixed to digital tape in order to greatly reduce analog tape hiss and to improve the quality and balance of sound. In the process, another four titles were discovered and are included here.
- For the Blue Note reissue of this historic session, we have gone back to the original 3 track masters and and remixed them to digital tape in order to improve the sound of the music and the fidelity. In the process, we discovered four unissued performances ("A Little Max," "Switch Blade," "REM Blues," and "Backward Country Boy Blues") that are now included on the album. Significantly, these four discoveries are all Duke Ellington compositions that have never been heard before in any form.

I'm very glad to read the comments from some younger folks that they are recently being introduced to different forms of music. I still wonder, (and this applies to everyone), why most people feel the incessant need to categorize or "pigeonhole" everything! Example: "Our drummer was recently introduced to Max Roach, but he's in a rock band and doesn't know anything about jazz." This sort of thinking only constructs walls against understanding, imo, and is very counter-productive! Listen, learn, and most importantly enjoy! If something moves you it MOVES YOU! Thanks everybody!

6 years after Ellington was reborn at Newport. This album is amazing, in the way that a lot of jazz of the late 50s and early 60s was, with almost random giants getting together and showing what was most amazing about jazz when it works. You have swinger Ellington, Hard Bopper Mingus and Bebop titan Max Roach coming together on Ellington's compositions, and making magic. If Ellington is Jazz's greatest composer, Mingus is third (behind Monk), and if there has to be a centrally important drummer, it's Roach. He's all over bebop's biggest acts.

Saw him only once at the music circus in Lambertville. He was followed by Dave Brubeck Quartet. Month of July 68’ maybe. Earlier in 62’ a friend and I drove up from Camp Lejeune and it was the same scenario, Duke followed

If you like Duke Ellington , I can recommend a book called But Beautiful . It's a great read if you like Jazz and to be honest even if you don't it's still brilliant. It's a bunch of imagined stories that is based on the real life first hand reports , myths , photographs , interviews ,recordings etc. of Lester Young , Ben Webster, Art Pepper , Charlie Mingus, Thelonious Monk , Bud Powell, Chet Baker et al. ( all beautiful losers )
Throughout it all there is this narrative that runs between all the stories of Duke travelling across the United States in a car to gigs , some time after his glory years when his whole band would travel on Pullman coaches. It's a fantastic book . Check it.
