Review by William Patrick Wend

Ernest V Stoneman and His Dixie Mountaineers 1927 1928 is a classic album that showcases the talents of the legendary musician and his band. The album features a mix of traditional folk, country, and bluegrass music, with Stoneman's distinctive voice and banjo playing at the forefront.

The album opens with "The Sinking of the Titanic," a poignant ballad that tells the story of the infamous maritime disaster. Other standout tracks include "The Spanish Merchant's Daughter," a haunting tale of love and betrayal, and "The Wreck of the Virginian," a rollicking tune about a train wreck.

Stoneman's band is in top form throughout the album, with tight harmonies and expert instrumentation. The Dixie Mountaineers provide a solid foundation for Stoneman's vocals and banjo, while also adding their own distinctive sound to the mix.

There's also a great version of this song recorded by Alan Lomax, released on a CD called "Southern Journey, Vol. 2: Ballads & Breakdowns." Sung by someone named Bob Carpenter. There it goes by the name "The Burglar Man."

I heard my great grandfather recite a version of this as a poem when I was very young. He was born about 1880 and said he learned it when he was young.

Thanks for the info. I believe that this recording goes back to the 1920's or so, {the picture doesn't necessarily reflect the age. I don't know if it was recorded in 1928 or not.} I'm glad you enjoyed this post, and I hope you have a great evening, Brian

Another title for this song is The Burglar Man, seacrh it on here there are a few different versions. I know this song from The Country Gentleman who are a bluegrass band and put this on one of their CDs. I would've thought they wrote it, but this is a oldie.

I wish I knew who wrote it. I know John Carson also recorded this song. I'm glad you enjoyed this post and I hope you have a wonderful day, Brian
