2016's Escape shows that there's still much need of an act like Austere. Yatras himself seems to be concordant, since this is Germ's album that sounds closer to his previous band. Excluding two interludes, everything screams To Lay Like Old Ashes here, from the pastoral B-minor recycling of "This Dreadful Emptiness" (now as a title track), and "The Old Dead Tree", which sounds like Deafheaven combined with Austere's usual mid-tempo rhythms and reverb-laden emotional chords. The rest of the cuts sound less immediate and more conventional, with a preponderance of E/A-minor harmonies ("With the Death of a Blossoming Flower"), that make the album only a partial substitute for Yatras' past bands.Highlights: "Escape", "The Old Dead Tree".
