Review by Juergen Pfeiffer

Here & Now's album Oxford Poly 18th June 1977 offers a glimpse into the band's live performance at the Oxford Polytechnic in 1977. The album features a mix of psychedelic and punk rock music, which is sure to get the listener's feet tapping.

The album opens with the energetic "Floating Anarchy Radio," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. The band's unique sound is evident in tracks like "What You See Is What You Are" and "Opium for the People." The latter features a catchy chorus that is likely to stay in the listener's head long after the album has ended.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Holy Smoke," which showcases the band's ability to seamlessly blend different genres of music. The track starts off with a reggae beat before transitioning into a more psychedelic sound.

The album ends with "Time Is a Sausage," a track that features a funky bass line and catchy lyrics. The song is a perfect way to end the album, leaving the listener wanting more.

Notes

  • This was Daevid Allen's first guest appearance with Here & Now. They formed Planet Gong a few months later.
  • Gig note : about 12 minutes have been edited out, due to CD time limits, and audio infidelity. These 12 mins (Soviet Komm. Radio etc) came between track 4 and 5 on the CD. Much much work has gone into mastering this CD from the original stereo tape. Hiss removal etc, etc, have helped reveal the sound extremely well , however, several of the flaws from the original recording remain and may even be amplified by the clean-up campaign.

About Here & Now

Members initially coming together in 1974 as communal living, Here & Now developed growing out of the UK Free Festivals movement through the 1970s, freely giving their services to associated groups, e.g. Legalise Cannabis Campaign, Stonehenge Festival, BIT, Release etc.. For many years they never charged an admission fee to their gigs, instead asking for voluntary contributions towards their costs via an organised collection at each event. In 1977 they joined and to become and released their first vinyl album. They reverted to Here & Now in 1978 after Daevid Allen decided he could no longer perform live.
