This isn't just proto-soul—hell, Tina always had soul—this record is proto-hard rock, even proto-metal. There was nobody in the early 60's who could stay on the pop charts while screaming the way Tina did!

Another proto-soul classic from the underrated producer Juggy Murray's Sue label. This is the first time most of us heard how sassy and earthy Tina could be. Yes, I recognized Mickey's deep voice from "Love Is Strange"- his distinct guitar rhythm also has just the right amount of grit for this record. Fun fact: Mickey may have been an R&B guitar legend, but that's his student Sylvia Robinson (ne Vanderpool) playing the signature guitar licks on "Love Is Strange".
