Ildjarn - Forest Poetry

Review by Yan-hong Lin

Forest Poetry by Ildjarn is an album that transports the listener to the depths of the forest. The Norwegian black metal artist has created an atmospheric and haunting soundscape that captures the essence of nature. The album is a combination of raw and primitive black metal with ambient sounds that evoke a sense of mysticism.

The album's opening track, "Eksistensens Jeger," sets the tone for the album with its eerie and ominous sound. The tracks that follow are equally haunting, with titles such as "Sølv," "Nattens Ledestjerne," and "Våken." The use of acoustic instruments, such as the flute and acoustic guitar, adds a layer of depth to the album, making it more than just a typical black metal release.

Ildjarn's vocals are raw and primal, perfectly complementing the music. The lyrics are in Norwegian, adding to the album's mystique and making it even more otherworldly. The album's production is intentionally lo-fi, giving it a raw and unpolished sound that adds to its authenticity.

About Ildjarn

Ildjarn is the solo project of Vidar Våer, former bassist of Death Metal band (which later turned into Emperor). From, 1992 through 1996 Ildjarn (occasionally collaborating with fellow Norwegians Nidhogg and ) recorded various demos, EPs and albums containing extreme, harshly distorted, raw black metal interspersed with minimalist ambient soundscapes, and disappeared from public view shortly after the release of , a double album containing nothing but droning ambient pieces. In 2002 Ildjarn returned with two ambient releases and , recorded in collaboration with Nidhogg. The Hardangervidda ambient project is the very last work recorded by the artist. However, demand from fans led to Ildjarn's decision to make the recordings from his vault available, as well as repressing most of his discography. In 2005, the double album sealed Ildjarn's discographic legacy.

Clocking at "only" 52 minutes with no less than 22 tracks, Forest Poetry is the apex of superficial songwriting, but it should be noted that most of the material is "hookier" than Strength in Anger, so the album should be the ideal choice for newcomers who want to know what the fuss is all about, despite being Ildjarn's final album. Fans of bands like Sebadoh and Scratch Acid, in particular, will find it interesting, especially due to the immediate endings of some tracks and the fact most are ultra-short. The project was kept almost dormant until 2005, when a compilation titled Ildjarn Is Dead signaled the end of its activity.Highlights: "Whispering Breeze".
