Joe & Eddie - Coast To Coast

gounyfrank

Review by Gunter Frank

Coast to Coast by Joe & Eddie is a classic album that showcases the duo's remarkable talent and creativity. The album features a collection of folk and traditional songs that are beautifully arranged and performed with precision and passion.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Swanee River," which is a soulful rendition of the Stephen Foster classic. Joe & Eddie's harmonies are simply breathtaking on this track and they manage to infuse the song with a sense of longing and nostalgia.

Another memorable track on the album is "Shenandoah," which is a hauntingly beautiful ballad that showcases the duo's vocal range and versatility. The song is a perfect example of the power of simplicity, as Joe & Eddie's voices blend together in perfect harmony to create a hauntingly beautiful melody.

Notes

  • In the vernacular of newspaper editors, calendar manufacturers and little old winemakers all over the world...1963 was a good year!
  • And speaking of pleasant happenings, you are holding one in your hand...a new album by another one of those pleasant 1963 products...the almost unbelievable good singing team of Joe and Eddie.
  • If you are one of the millions who have heard Joe and Eddie before, you know exactly what I am talking about and, for those of you who are getting your first earful, all I can say is you will remember the day.
  • Joe Gilbert and Eddie Brow, both 21, began singing together in high school in Berkeley, California. They entered a talent contest and since they were fast friends and didn't want to compete with each other, they entered as a team. Naturally they won and have been inseparable ever since. There followed engagements at the Purple Onion and the Hungry i in San Francisco, then the Interlude and Troubadour in Hollywood. They made their first Crescendo album in the summer of 1962, which won them a loyal following on a national scale. The 1963 was the year, indeed, that everything fell into place and the boys started to "happen" in a spectacular way. T.V. became their "not-too-secret" weapon. They have appeared on "The Lively Ones," the Jackie Gleason Show; Danny Kaye was so impressed with their first shot on his T.V. show he brought them back for a quick return. A regular place on the show is now a certainty. They are also to be featured on the "Hootenanny" T.V. show, as well as tour with the Jack Linkletter concert series...coast to coast. But let's not forget films...they were the hit of M.G.M.'s "Hootenanny Hoot." Said the director when he saw the final print: "Had I known they were so great, we would have had them do three times as many songs!"
  • Yes, 1963 was an active year for Joe & Eddie. But as Al Jolson used to say, "You ain't heard nothin' yet!"

TCM showed the movie 'Hootenanny Hoot (1/14/15)  and after hearing them sing 'There's A Meeting' I just had to find more of their songs. They were unknown to me even though I love all kinds of music and watched every variety show on tv during their time together. This song  is so moving. I've already listened to it more than 15 times in one sitting and looked up Phil Ochs ,who wrote it. I ordered their greatest hits off amazon. When I think of what passes for music & singing these days, compared to Joe & Eddie,  I want to weep. The blend of their voices is amazing.  I'm happy I watched that movie. Listening to Joe & Eddie's songs bring me comfort since I was down about the Christmas holidays being over. Thank goodness for  those who upload them to youtube. I also found  their versions of 'Children Go' ,' Mariah'  and many more here. I'm going to play Phil's songs that are here also.

Good cover, but it's unfortunate that nowhere in the video, video title or description there is no credit to Phil Ochs who was the person who wrote this song and sung it. If you're reading this, give a listen to Phil Ochs' original song (and his other songs) and I believe you may enjoy him. In my opinion, his talent rivals that of Bob Dylan and the world has been a sadder, less enlightened place since his suicide in 1976.

i got this album when it first came out, this and There is Meeting were the two big hits. 1964 or early 65, i got to see them in concert at Royce Hall, UCLA when i was 15. good times. i tried googling to see when they played there but it's too obscure.

Just the best best best music ever. Loved these guys and this album in particular. Upload all the songs. This brings tears to my eyes. I wore this album out. I'm an acoustic bass player and I owe a lot to an early exposure to these guys. Such great music. OMG

If only Joe Gilbert hadn't died in that car crash in 1966, these guys would have played a major role in their times.
