Review by Bruno Fernandes

The album Cantates 147 82 1 Marie De Nazareth by Johann Sebastian Bach, Montreal Baroque is a true masterpiece of classical music. The Montreal Baroque ensemble delivers an exceptional performance of Bach's cantatas, showcasing their musical talent and skill.

The album features three cantatas, each one a beautiful tribute to the Virgin Mary. The first cantata, BWV 147, is perhaps the most famous of the three, and the Montreal Baroque ensemble brings it to life with their stunning instrumental and vocal performances. The second cantata, BWV 82, is a somber and introspective piece, and the ensemble captures its mournful spirit perfectly. Finally, the third cantata, BWV 1, is a joyful celebration of the Virgin Mary, and the Montreal Baroque ensemble delivers a rousing and uplifting performance.

Throughout the album, the musicians demonstrate their mastery of Bach's complex and intricate compositions, and their attention to detail is evident in every note. The vocal performances are particularly noteworthy, with the soloists delivering powerful and emotive renditions of the cantatas' lyrics.

About Johann Sebastian Bach, Montreal Baroque

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany. A prolific German composer and organist, his sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra and solo instruments drew together the strands of the baroque genre and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, a control of harmonic and motivic organisation from the smallest to the largest scales, and the adaptation of rhythms and textures from abroad, particularly Italy and France. Many people consider him to be the greatest Baroque composer, and one of the greatest composers of all time. Revered for their intellectual depth, technical command and artistic beauty, J.S. Bach's works include the Brandenburg concertos, the keyboard suites and partitas, the Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion, The Musical Offering, The Art of Fugue and a large number of cantatas, of which about 220 survive. He died on July 28, 1750. Some of his sons also became composers - , , and .
