Review by Cassio Santos

Motets by Josquin Desprez is a remarkable album that showcases the genius of one of the most important composers of the Renaissance period. The album is performed by the Orlando Consort, a group of four male singers who have a deep understanding of the music of this era.

The album features 18 motets by Josquin Desprez, all of which are sung with precision and sensitivity by the Orlando Consort. The group's harmonies are exquisite, and their voices blend together seamlessly to create a rich and vibrant sound.

One of the standout tracks on the album is the motet "Ave Maria...virgo serena," which is widely considered to be one of Josquin's masterpieces. The Orlando Consort's performance of this piece is truly breathtaking, with each member of the group contributing to the intricate and complex harmonies.

About Josquin Desprez, Orlando Consort

Josquin Des Prés (also found as Josquin des Prez, Desprez, Des Prez, etc), and often referred to simply as Josquin, was a Hainaut composer of the Franco-Flemish School of Polyphony. Josquin (derived from the Flemish "Josken") was renowned as a singer, composer and educator. Characteristic of his music are the great transparency and the tight structure, in which the music closely matches the text. In the chanson, in the mid-15th century, he was the main exponent of a new style in which the techniques of canon and counterpoint were applied to secular songs. He has been called the most important composer of the entire Renaissance and worked mainly in France and Italy. Born: c. 1450/1455, in the County of Hainaut (i.e. the present-day Belgium) Died: 1521-08-27 (Condé-sur-l'Escaut, France).
