The title doesn't matter as much as the fact that it's a good composition.

I wasn't alive in the 60's, but I've always felt a strange connection to that era. Something about this particular song makes me nostalgic for those days, almost as though I lived them. Music is funny like that sometimes.

Anyone know why it's called "Mr. Miff" and not "Frightened Little Girl - Instrumental"?

I first heard this song on Wfil in the summer of 1967 while vacationing in Avalon NJ. Some have commented that July 4th sounds like an english band. However, as my parents and relatives were from the Philly area and we would visit them a couple times during the year (from the D.C. suburbs), I learned to appreciate the distinct nuances of the Philadelphia accent which you can hear in this song. Also, some years ago, there were a series of CDS called Fading Yellow which included rare sunshine pop and psychedelic pop songs from the mid to late 60s. This song was included on one of the early volumes which I bought on Ebay, just to have a copy of this song, along with Blood Of Oblivion by the Rainy Daze.

Even though this song probably didn't make the top 40 I can't help but think Neil Young heard this song considering one of his own. "You Are Like A Hurricane" has the same Melody.

A good song that reminds me of Silver's 1976 hit "Wham Bang Shang a Lang,""
I transcribed the lyrics below...
Ba-ba-ba vocal line
1) One day not so long ago / I looked out my window
And I saw in the street below / someone I used to know
(chorus) Was a frightened little girl outside my window
And she's lookin' for a world, one that she doesn't know
A fickle little girl, looks like she's on the go
But how is the world to know?
Ba-ba-ba vocal line
2) Someday will come the time / to look out my window
And to shout to this love of mine / just how I feel inside
(chorus) Hey frightened little girl outside my window
Just out lookin' for a world one who looked 'round below
You'll never find a world like we shared awhile ago
Someday we'll share again I know
Ba-ba-ba vocal line
(chorus) There's a frightened little girl outside my window
And she's lookin' for a world, one that she doesn't know
A fickle little girl, looks like she's on the go
But how is the world to know?

In reading some of the comments below -- Are you saying this was from the Philadelphia area? I grew up nearby (northern suburbs of Wilmington, Del.), and I now have on Facebook (carl.moore.7792) a big selection of youtube stuff in "Music Selections" pages which includes this song. I just re-posted the link to this song on my facebook page, citing this as good-but-now-obscure, and I'd like it to reach people outside the Phila. area.

The writer's are listed as The July Four & the Producer as Plus Productions although some copies show POST Records founder 'Buzz Curtis' as the producer. This song received heavy airplay at WIBG (Wibbage) in Philly in July & August of 1967 peaking at #58 on their weekly Top 99 survey. The version by Pumpkin released on Puma Records appears to be the same version as it is the same length, Plus Productions is listed as the Producer & the flip side is an instrumental.

OMG!!!!This was my favorite song when I was about 11 years old. No clue these guys were from Darby area. Would have sworn they were Brits!

It wasn't a british band but a group of guys from Bonner in Upper Darby. The writer was from Collingdale, PA and Dennis Defino was the bass player, Joe Sherwood is the writer and guitarist, Dick Sherwood was the keyboardist and Charlie Myers was the drummer.

I recently found the Pumpkin 45, its the same version as here. Almost looks like a early 80s repress. the flip is called "sir ears lefeets in clover"

I had written the lyrics to this song in a 1970 journal and could still recall the tune. (This was one of my favorite songs when I was in high school in NJ.) I tried looking for this song for years. Never found anything about the band. What a joy to find it here. Thank you so much for posting it.

The Pumpkin version is the same.
