I found it rather ironic that one of the most beautiful movie theme songs of all time would actually be from a ghost story, but that's where this standard came from, "The Uninvited," starring Ray Milland, and a gorgeous newcomer, "Gail Russell"—from which the name derives. Russell's ethereal beauty made her Paramount's top choice for the role, and they had high hopes for her eventual success. But sadly, she began to drink when this film was being made to hide disguise her nervousness, and tragically, the habit became her undoing. After making only a few more movies, the fragile starlet died at the age of only 35, making the "haunting" quality of this song all the more moving.
