thanks a lot for putting this up. bought this as a teenager and probably drove my parents nuts playing it. i didn't remember that it had been recorded so early, before the Newport 1958 albums i had featuring Max. i imagine he was still using calfskin heads back then. the tympani track is interesting and couldn't believe the tempo on Just One Of Those Things.

Shortly after Clifford Brown and Richie Powell's terrible Car Accident. It wasn't yet a year.

Sonny Rollins has been my favorite tenor sax, together with Stan Getz and Zoot Sims - for years. Then in the seventies I definitely turned to Cool and Swing ( middle Jazz, Mainstream, whatever you call it) Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Ben Webster, Chu Berry etc. same for the alto players. I was fed up of the so-called "Free" jazz. and now, at my 81 years I concentrate on BOP-HARD BOP- COOL-WEST COAST and SWING with some excursions into Chicago and New Orleans + BLUES and GOSPEL. I like Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.
Kenny Dorham was also a very good trumpet player, too underrated. He was in no way inferior to the others - more known - like Lee Morgan, Donald Byrd, Freddie Hubbard. Blue Mitchell etc. Howard McGhee was also sadly very underrated. And, on the West Coast, Carmell Jones who sounded like Clifford Brown. I remember making a blindfold test with a BUD SHANK QUINTET Contemporary LP where he was playing baritone sax accompanied by Carmell Jones. None of my some 20 friends recognized any of the five musicians ( I was still a student and living in my home country,Switzerland, at that time.) this must have been 1960. the name of the LP is " GROOVIN" under Bud Shank's name. I warmly recommend it. You will be in for a huge surprise.

I saw Max with the Turrentine brothers at the old Crystal Caverns in Washington, DC 1959. He did this thing during a solo where he went around the club using sticks on anything he cared to.

max roach bands with rollins, brown and few others and after few years, art blakey, are, in my opinion the best hard bop. the later were derivative, like a decade before parker, dizzy and powell were to bebop.

Havent heard this since college. Use to live in an old appartment and a old lady rent me a room. Her late husband had a decent jazz collections and this was in it.... Minor trouble is my favorite.

Grande Kenny Dorham che si trova costretto a suonare assoli velocissimi e dimostra di saperlo fare alla grande. Anche se lui preferisce fraseggi più lenti dove può var valere la grandezza della sua voce inarrivabile.
