Review by David Blide

The album 1926-1931 Rarest Brunswick Masters by Red Nichols and His Five Pennies is a delightful collection of jazz tunes that showcases the talent of Nichols and his band. The album features 24 tracks, including some rare recordings that have been remastered for this release.

The music on this album is a blend of traditional jazz and swing, with Nichols' trumpet playing taking center stage. The rest of the band provides solid accompaniment, with strong solos from the saxophone and piano players. The rhythm section keeps things moving along nicely, with a steady beat that is perfect for dancing.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Dinah," a lively tune that features some great trumpet playing from Nichols. The band really swings on this track, with a catchy melody that is sure to get stuck in your head. Another highlight is "Ida, Sweet as Apple Cider," which has a fun, upbeat feel that is perfect for a party.

About Red Nichols And His Five Pennies

Red Nichols and his Five Pennies were one of the most popular bands of the New York Jazz scene of the 1920s. They recorded under a variety of different names, including the Arkansas Travelers, , the , , , The Hottentots and Miff Mole and his Little Molers. The band's style was often called "Chamber Jazz" by critics and for what it lacked in hot intensity it made up for with a cool somewhat detached, yet urban and sophisticated sound. In 1959 Hollywood made a highly fictionalized movie about the band called "The Five Pennies
