Review by Dian Pratiwi

The Modern Jazz Quartet's album Topsy This One's for Basie is a tribute to the legendary American jazz pianist and bandleader Count Basie. Released in 1985, the album features the quartet's signature blend of jazz, blues, and classical music, as well as their impeccable musicianship and improvisation skills.

The album starts off with the title track, "Topsy," a Basie classic that the quartet infuses with their own unique style. The track features John Lewis on piano, Milt Jackson on vibraphone, Percy Heath on bass, and Connie Kay on drums, each one showcasing their individual talents while still maintaining a cohesive sound.

Other standout tracks on the album include "Blues in Hoss' Flat," "Splanky," and "Jumpin' at the Woodside," all of which pay homage to Basie's swinging big band sound. The quartet's version of "Li'l Darlin'" is also a standout, with Jackson's vibraphone adding a hauntingly beautiful quality to the classic ballad.
