Review by Remedy Loame

The album Down Hearted Blues Waitin For The Evenin Mail by Noble Sissle Eubie Blake is a delightful blend of jazz, blues, and ragtime music. The album features the soulful voice of Sissle and the masterful piano playing of Blake. The songs are a mix of original compositions and classic standards, all infused with the unique style of the duo.

The album opens with the upbeat and catchy "Down Hearted Blues." Sissle's vocals are powerful and emotive, perfectly capturing the heartache of the lyrics. Blake's piano playing is equally impressive, adding a lively energy to the track. The album continues with "You've Got Everything a Sweet Mama Needs But Me," a playful tune that showcases Sissle's excellent range and vocal control.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Low Down Blues." The slow, sultry melody is the perfect showcase for Sissle's smooth, velvety voice. Blake's piano playing is equally impressive, adding just the right amount of depth and texture to the track.

Very nice, Interesting to see 2 black men based in NY based doing a tune written by 2 black women based in Chicago. Alberta Hunter left Memphis as a teen and became successful singing in Chicago, Lovie austen was 1 of several piano playing women who successfully led bands in Chicago in the 1920s. Hunter's recording of this era had male pronouns for losing "her man" and the things he did tyo her. Sissle reverses the gender.

In the 1970s, Eubie was still playing gigs. I saw him play at the Mariposa Folk Fest in Toronto, mid-1970s. He was on an outdoor stage by himself plunking away at his piano, still going strong in his late 80s.
