Philip Glass - The Photographer

Review by RONALDO BALBACCH

The Photographer by Philip Glass is a mesmerizing musical journey that takes the listener through the life of a fictional photographer. The album is a mix of classical and experimental music, with Glass's signature minimalistic style shining through. The album is divided into three acts, each representing a different phase of the photographer's life.

The first act, titled "The Photographer's Day," is a beautiful and haunting piece that sets the tone for the rest of the album. Glass's use of repetition and layering creates a hypnotic effect that draws the listener in.

The second act, "The Photographer and the Emperor," is more experimental in nature. Glass uses a variety of instruments and sounds to create a sense of chaos and confusion, which mirrors the photographer's mental state as he deals with the pressures of fame.

The final act, "The Photographer's Return," is a beautiful and poignant conclusion to the album. Glass's use of strings and piano creates a sense of reflection and introspection that perfectly captures the photographer's journey.

  • This 1982 composition was for a theatrical work based on the eventful life of 19th Century photographer Eadweard Muybridge whose trial for the murder of his wife's lover forms the musical climax to this release. "The Photographer" features a solo violin, chamber orchestra and voices augmented by his own ensemble which enabled Glass to stylistically move on from his earlier work to what soon became distinctly the 'Glass' style. Reissued as part of the 'Glass' edition.

I am 64 years old, and am just starting to discover Philip Glass. I have watched and enjoyed the film koyanisquatsi for years, I knew glass did the music, but I thought that was just a footnote to the film. One day I decided to listen to the soundtrack on YouTube, which then started to recommend many Glass pieces to me. I have since fallen in love with his music. The term "genius" is often thrown around quite freely, and while there are no doubt people who have very creative and brilliant minds when it comes to writing music, very few would fall into the category of "genius"; Philip Glass is one who does. His compositions are so original and unique. I wish I could meet him and thank him for giving the world ? so much beautiful music ?. One thing I must bear in mind, is of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As we sit enraptured listening to Glass's beautiful ? compositions, not everyone feels the same way about it. My lovely wife, (who I adore) absolutely despises this type of music , but I love ? it, and am looking forward to further exploring the magnificent musical world of Philip Glass

I heard this a long time ago, I knew it was Philip Glass but I didn't know what it was called. I've been searching for it a long time. This is Glass at his very best.

I’ve been listening to Philip Glass for many years but this music really didn’t hit me until I saw one of Marc Jacobs last fashion shows for Louis Vuitton where a train was used on the set. I still go back to watch it because it is so fitting.

I look at Randy. He's shivering, soaking wet from the shower, his tears and his own mess. I've got him literally the palm of my hand. It's just the two of us and the sky as it had been for so many flights across the Continental US, and for that one brief eternity in the shower of Randy's brownstone where he took me to heaven. Surely as I was about to take him to hell. His eyes say "You don't have to do this" but Randy knows better than to speak. So I say the last thing he expects to hear, "Hold me like the world is ending" and it isn't redundant because earlier I only thought that, I never said it out loud. So he holds me and together we fall from the sky. Just how it almost was on that most fateful and choppy night when we first. Our bodies together. We are whole once again. One undulating mass. I thought to myself "Fuck!"
