Review by Juliette Rossant

The Pro Arte Orchestra's album, Edwardian Favourites, is a delightful collection of classical compositions that transport the listener to a bygone era. The orchestra, under the direction of George Weldon, delivers a polished and refined performance that captures the essence of the Edwardian period.

The album features works by some of the most renowned composers of the time, including Elgar, Walton, and Vaughan Williams. The orchestra's rendition of Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1" is particularly impressive, with its stirring brass fanfare and majestic melody.

Other highlights of the album include Walton's "Crown Imperial" and Vaughan Williams' "The Lark Ascending." The orchestra's interpretation of these pieces is both sensitive and dynamic, showcasing the depth and range of the Pro Arte Orchestra's musicianship.

About Pro Arte Orchestra, The

The Pro Arte Orchestra was founded as a limited company chaired by the double-bass player Eugene Cruft; directors also included Archie Camden and Antony English. The first concert was given at the Royal Festival Hall on 21 October 1955 with a Rossini overture, Schubert's Unfinished, Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole and works by Strauss and Chabrier, conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent. Much of the work of the orchestra, however, was in the recording studio, particularly for the Pye-Nixa label.
