Review by LUIS AVALOS

Hiway Child by Rick Neufeld is an impressive album that showcases his skills as a singer-songwriter. The album features a blend of folk, country, and rock influences that create a unique sound that is both engaging and soulful.

The album's standout tracks include "Hiway Child," "Lonesome Road," and "Broken Dreams," which are all beautifully written and performed with passion and emotion. Rick's vocals are powerful and expressive, and his lyrics are thought-provoking and heartfelt.

The album's production is excellent, with a warm and organic sound that perfectly complements the songs' themes and moods. The instrumentation is varied and expertly played, with acoustic and electric guitars, drums, bass, and keyboards all contributing to the album's rich and dynamic sound.

there are songs that can still touch you all these years and Rick Neufeld may had release his best album which may be a undiscovered classic that does need to be resurfaced. The Parible is among the best songs on there and it really sinks deep.

Thanks for posting this "indigo!"
My vinyl copy has been long lost to me. Hiway Child and The Parable are  both important songs to me!

I just saw the documentary about The Bells, so I'm in their music mode, and someone just told me that Neufeld had recorded his song. Of course I had to check it out. A writer knows his intent when writing it and upbeat is certainly an alternate method. The lyrics do make me think laidback and lazy like The Bells though, but I do like it a lot too. Being a Winnipegger, other than having heard the song when I was really young, and loving it, I never really saw life here like that, haha. Then again, I grew up with European parents so it was always go-go-go. I still love the song and I thank you, Mr. Neufeld.

Okay, I speak as the final arbiter on all things musical and I have a slight preference for the Bells' version. More melancholic and somber and exactly what I imagine Manitoba to be like.

I remember meeting Rick in the mid to late 1960s when our church group had a coffee house in the basement of the United Church in West Kildonan. Rick came and played several nights for us. I like both versions of the song.

Hello, Rick, if you ever read this. We once chatted on-line about your fantastic tune. Once again, thank you. And, if you ever run into Brad Roberts, tell him I said thank you, as well.

Must be something in the water.

Rick played at our school (Tanner's Crossing) in Minnedosa in the early 1970s.  He had all the students singing along with him.  A humble guy, he signed autographs for most of the students.  What a great memory.  He was an underrated talent compared to the other Manitoba powerhouses of The Guess Who, BTO and Neil Young in those days.

This is the first time I've heard the writer's version. I too prefer this over the Bell's hit .

Rick came to Glenboro school where I taught in 72-76. I've never forgotten that. Nice to hear him again.
