Shostakovich Concertgebouw Orchestra, Bernard Haitink - Symphony No 8

Review by Jason Friend

Symphony No 8 by Shostakovich Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducted by Bernard Haitink, is a stunning masterpiece that showcases the composer's intricate and deeply emotional style. The orchestra delivers an outstanding performance, with every note and nuance carefully crafted to convey the depth and complexity of the music.

From the opening bars of the first movement, the listener is drawn into a world of haunting melodies and soaring harmonies, punctuated by moments of intense drama and angst. The second movement, with its hauntingly beautiful string passages and evocative woodwind solos, is a highlight of the album, as is the darkly brooding third movement, which builds to a thunderous climax before subsiding into a mournful coda.

Throughout the album, Haitink proves himself to be a masterful conductor, bringing out the best in the orchestra and highlighting the intricate textures and complex harmonies of Shostakovich's music. The recording quality is also outstanding, capturing every detail of the orchestra's performance with clarity and precision.

The 1st movement alone stands as one of the greatest musical achievements of all time. A tone poem reflecting the tragedy of mankind....... Moments of joy obliterated by unforgettable sadness. Do not tell the children this.

I'll add a personal comment about the 8th symphony. This is my go-to work whenever the Christmas holiday season comes around. As one who suffers from depression, I can understand the despair and gloom implied in this work and in its composition. And from what I know about its composition, I have gotten insight into my depression. I also have come to realise that in such situations, rarely is there victory or triumph; at best, there is only a hope for a truce.

Excellent performance. It reminds all of us about the true meaning of suffering during war-or during such emergencies as the corona-virus pandemic. Another lesson is that war should not be regarded as a matter of good guys vs. bad guys (as so much American media seems to portray American conflicts) but a matter of loneliness--and the quest for peace. Or in this case, a truce.

The magic about Shostakovich is that it takes one second and you realize how serious the music and the story it tells are. Magnificient tension, tons of musical ideas, bizarre, strange, heart-felt depth.

As Samuel Barber's Adagio For Strings was taken from his string quarter and performed as a solo piece for string orchestra subsequently gaining worldwide popularity, I recommend that the I. Adagio - Allegro Non Troppo of Dimitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 8 in C Minor likewise be performed as a solo piece. The entire symphony is remarkable, but that first movement of twenty-five minutes can stand completely on its own in communicating the composer's singular vision. This recommendation is made with the intention of giving Shostakovich's music greater access to the general public.
