Styx - Lies

Review by Jason Kapler

Lies is the fifth studio album by the American rock band Styx. Released in 1983, the album features the hit singles "Mr. Roboto" and "Don't Let It End." The album's theme revolves around the idea of deception and the consequences that come with it.

The album opens with the title track "Lies," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. The song's lyrics are about someone who has been lied to and is now trying to come to terms with the truth. The track features a driving beat and catchy chorus that will leave you humming along.

"Mr. Roboto" is perhaps the most well-known song from the album. The song tells the story of a futuristic society where robots have taken over. The song's catchy chorus and synthesizer-heavy instrumentation make it a fan favorite to this day.

"Don't Let It End" is a power ballad that showcases the band's softer side. The song's emotional lyrics and soaring vocals make it a standout track on the album.

Like this WAY better than the original version by the Knickerbockers! Hearing this kinda makes me want to be a kid again, jumping on the bed.

Sounds so 60's very early 70's!!! Great song! Had no idea it was a Beatles song. The band sounds tight and definitely on their way to Big Things!

James young is really not that good in these early years until "Equinox" His sound is terrible! His phrasing of notes is a atrocious. For the most parts this band sounds like a "beatnick" band sunglasses- go-tees- and black beanie artist hats. The main problem is the guitar is bad on these albums. The song "man of miracles" is pretty good, out side of that the guitar work is terrible.

Lies, lies, you're tellin' me that you'll be true
Lies, lies
That's all I ever hear from you
Tears, tears
I shed a million tears for you
Tears, tears
And now you're lovin' someone new
Someday I'm gonna be happy
But I don't know when just now
Lies, lie-ies
A-breakin' my heart
You think that you're such a smart girl
And I'll believe what you say
But who do you think you are, girl
To lead me on this way hey
Lies, lies
I can't believe a word you say
Lies, lies
Are gonna make you sad someday
Some day you're gonna be lonely
But you won't find me around
Lies, lie-ies
A-breakin' my heart
Someday I'm gonna be happy
But I don't know when just now
Lies, lie-ies
A-breakin' my heart
You think that you're such a smart girl
And I'll believe what you say
But who do you think you are, girl
To lead me on this way hey
Lies (ah!), lies (yeah baby)
I can't believe a word you say
Lies, lies
Are gonna make you sad someday
Some day you're gonna be lonely
But you won't find me around
Lies, lie-ies
A-breakin' my heart
I said, baby, now (breakin' my heart)
Oh, yeah, you're still breakin' my heart (breakin' my heart)

I burst out laughing when I first heard this on Pandora! Styx, the band who brought us Mr. Roboto and Come Sail Away, covering what is essentially an early Beatles knockoff. That is crazy.

the true old Styx-Sound with a fantastic voice by Dennis

An (obviously) great remake of this old Knickerbockers hit. Wooden Nickel replaced it with "Best Thing" on their numerous reissues after Styx hit the big time. Thankfully, they put it back on the The Complete Wooden Nickel Recordings cd.

That explains it...I always wondered why "Best Thing" was on both my Styx 1 and "Man Of Miracles" LPs...My Wooden Nickel copy of "Man Of Miracles" is a reissue...never heard this before. Great cover!

I usually don't don't like any remakes from the Beatles in any way, form, shape, or fashion or from any other singers or performers but coming from a staunch Beatles Fan, I must say this is very good remake!

This is one of the all-time greatest covers ever. It's a shame that it sounds so blindingly bright on the remaster.
