About Thelonious Monk
American jazz pianist and composer.
Born: 10 October 1917 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, USA.
Died: 17 February 1982 in Weehawken, New Jersey, USA (aged 64).
One of the most influential pianists of the twentieth century, Thelonious Monk had a idiosyncratic improvisational style and made numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire. He is often regarded as one of the founders of bebop. Monk's prolific compositions and improvisations are full of dissonant harmonies and angular melodic twists. His unorthodox approach to the piano combines a highly percussive attack with abrupt, use of silence and dramatic pauses. He was also known for a distinct fashion sense in his suits, hats and trademark sunglasses. Monk was an unconventional stage presence, known for getting up from his piano to dance (sometimes in a counter-clockwise motion which drew comparisons to ring-shout and Muslim Sufi whirling) while his band members were still playing. Monk is one of only five jazz musicians to date to be featured on the cover of Time magazine, which puts him in a select company with , , , and .

My love for this tune grows in every listening.
I'm quoting Wikipedia:
"On October 15, Monk attempted to record the title track with the same band during a four-hour session. The complexity of the title track became a challenge for Monk's sidemen, who attempted twenty-five takes, and led to tension between him and Henry, who nearly broke down mentally, and Pettiford, who exchanged harsh words with Monk during the session. Monk tried to make it easier on Henry by not playing during his alto solo. During one of the takes, producer Orrin Keepnews and others in the control room could not hear Pettiford's playing and checked his bass microphone for a malfunction, but ultimately realized that he was pantomiming his playing. Without a completed single take, Keepnews ultimately pieced together the album version from multiple takes."
It seems that even top level musicians were not very used to strange songs that double time every chorus and come back :)

The part at the beginning with all the horns and with little glimpses and fills all threw the song
That tone that tone it's so modern
Not from that time
Monk played it though
Very sophisticated
Lost on most
But the true believers and the true hearts knew all along its
Telepathy of sound from the fifties to anytimes at all
Sounds like punk rock to me

A jazz combo from my university played a metal arrangement of this last night. It was perhaps the most chaotically beautiful thing I've ever heard.

You are a lucky man. I was more fortunate. My father as an Italian opera nut and wanted to name me Giacomo Puccini Somma. Thankfully, my mother squelched that idea. Ciao and happy listening. I love Monk.

Max Roach's transition to the higher tempo at around 5:50 , keeping the sort of "tribal feel" of the solo is awesome
