Synopsis
Block, of average height, 18 years old, Maneco Tatit is openly segregated by Dr. Burgone, a university professor. The young Maneco, in turn, mestreats the female condition, in the form of his girlfriend, Teresa. Eighteen ears old and unemployed, Teresa turns to prositution to pay for her psychology course at PUC University, where Dr. Burgone saves her from expulsion for stealing a book. Tatit's father, Dr. Burgone, only discovers this in the last chapter, after he has killed his son out of jealousy.
The title of Estudando o Pagode, literally means "studying pagode" (the sub genre of samba). This album is a three-act operetta about women and their relationship to men. Zé refers to the album as being masculist in that "it calls man's attention to the huge disadvantage he has created in his present relationship with women."1 As is common in Zé's music, this album incorporates novel sounds such as a braying donkey and those created from an instrument made out of ficus (fig) leaves. About Tom Zé

(born Antônio José Santana Martins, 1936 in Bahia, Brazil), Tom Zé (a faithful informalization of his given names, literally meaning "Tony Joe") is a Brazilian songwriter and (experimental) composer who was influential in the Tropicália movement of 1960s Brazil. After the military government of the began to crack down Tropicália, Zé moved out of the public eye and began to experiment with novel instruments and composition styles, thus remaining true to the experimental and Dada impulses of Tropicália. He has been noted for both his unorthodox approach to melody and instrumentation, employing various objects as instruments, but remained rather obscure. In the early 1990s rediscovered one of his albums, Estudando o Samba (1975), on a visit to Rio de Janeiro, Zé then was the first artist signed to Byrne's new label.
