Tristania was a band from Norway, formed in 1995 by Morten Veland, Einar Moen and Kenneth Ølsson. Tristania's music is usually classified as Gothic metal with death/doom influences, due to its strong tie and legacy within the gothic metal history. Their songs largely deal with dark and sentimental topics, including depression, sadness, suicide, love, absence, and anger. On 17 September 2022, due to inactivity, they announced their official disbandment. The 90's were a breakthrough year for woman-vocalists Gothic Metal, and Tristania were one of the main exponents. Their second 1999 album, Beyond the Veil, is built on the same blueprint of Widow's Weeds, using Burzum/Satyricon E-minor Black Metal progressions but with less raw production and more thundering bass drum recording. The title track starts with a thundering crescendo and Rotting Christ/Moonspell-like A/D-minor chugging, ending with a chorus-led melancholic arpeggio section. "A Sequel of Decay" features more acoustic guitar, and most of the cuts follow similar route, with heavy, palm-muted stanzas/choruses and quieter, string/piano-driven codas ("Opus Relinque", in particular, ends with a final semitone onslaught after one of such low-key passages).The riffs tend to use a limited chord palette, but some, like the arpeggios on "Lethean River" strongly flirt with Psychedelic Pop/Shoegaze, and "Angina"'s progressions strongly recall Dissection, in addition to Iron Maiden. Though the growled/shrieked vocals are too high in the mix, overall Beyond the Veil not only it's the band's crowning achievement, but one of the very few masterpieces of the "beauty and the beast" phenomenon, which has always been more revolved around imagery and Shakespeare cliches than proper inspiration. Besides, also Tristania, along with many of these original exponents in later years, suffered a decline of recognition and sales from which they never recovered.Highlights: "Beyond the Veil", "A Sequel of Decay", "Lethean River, "Angina".
