Vincent Moon a réalisé ces enregistrements de septembre à novembre 2012 en Russie dans le cadre de son projet d'ethnographie expérimentale: Collection Petites Planètes. Il a bénéficié de l’aide locale de Bulat Khalilov (Circassie, Ossétie, Tchétchénie, Dagestan), Elena Sahnova (Terre Noire, Souzdal), Tatiana Skuratenok (Carélie), ainsi que de nombreuses autres personnes croisées sur la route. Ces chansons font partie d’un ensemble plus large de trente films sur les musiques de Russie, dénommé Oko, Carnet de Russie. Tous ces films sont visibles gratuitement sur Internet, à l’adresse vincentmoon.com.
La plupart des chansons qui composent ce disque n’ont jamais été enregistrées auparavant et ont été très peu diffusées à l’intérieur de ces pays ou régions. La majorité sont chantées dans des langues locales et il nous importait de mettre l’accent sur la mosaïque culturelle russe, trop souvent ignorée.
