I vividly remember the first time I saw this video and heard this song.
In 2023, when the dominance of the oldies has been a fact of popular musical life for generations, it's hard to put yourself back in 1982. But back then it was widely thought that video really *was* killing all the old rock stars. It was like silent movies to talkies, except the losers this time weren't the ones with the squeaky voices (those were actually 'in'); this time the losers were the ones losing their hair, who didn't drown their sound in cheesy synthesizers, etc. One by one they had to leave, go in exile or to detox, maybe head to Nashville, or tone up in the gym like Bruce Springsteen did shortly.
And then I heard on MTV that The Who was coming out with a new album and video. I wasn't big into The Who, but I wondered if they'd try to 1982-ify themselves, go big hair, try for a 'deep' video, or just generally flop on their way out as others did. I was curious, but not real hopeful.
Video comes on, and... I'm a Who fan forevermore. These guys don't give an f about any of the trappings that were so much a part of rock in 1982. They crank up the synth loop that is instantly memorable, then the band shows up one by one onstage, with the roadies, and Pete steps up to the mic and tells it straight. It's a no-bullshit video by a no-bullshit band with a song that calls bullshit on all the bullshit of the drug/celebrity culture of the time. If this was to be The Who's end, as reported, well, they showed everyone else how it was supposed to be done, and dropped the mic.
