Review by Curtis Toombs

The Who's album "Substitute / I'm a Boy / Pictures of Lily" is a classic rock masterpiece that showcases the band's exceptional musicianship and songwriting skills. The album features some of The Who's most iconic tracks, including "Substitute," "I'm a Boy," and "Pictures of Lily," all of which have stood the test of time and remain beloved by fans to this day.

The album is a perfect representation of the band's unique sound, which seamlessly blends elements of rock, pop, and punk into a cohesive and unforgettable package. The guitar work is particularly impressive, with Pete Townshend's signature power chords and intricate solos driving each song forward.

In addition to the band's instrumental prowess, the album also features some of Roger Daltrey's most powerful vocal performances. His soaring voice brings an emotional depth to tracks like "Pictures of Lily," which tells the story of a young man's infatuation with a pin-up girl.

So much to enjoy here: Townshend's brilliant lyrics and flutey-voiced repetitions of 'sub-sti-stute'; Roger's swaggering vocal; Moon's sensational speed-driven re-entries over Entwistle's torpedoing bass riffs. It easily outpaces most of the opposition of those times. Fantastic! ??

One of 'the sixties' best, methinks...Townshend in fine songwriting form, and certainly one of their finest moments as a band...

You think we look pretty good together
You think my shoes are made of leather

But I'm a substitute for another guy
I look pretty tall but my heels are high
The simple things you see are all complicated
I look pretty young, but I'm just back-dated, yeah

(Substitute) your lies for fact
(Substitute) I can see right through your plastic mac
(Substitute) I look all white, but my dad was black
(Substitute) my fine linen suit is really made out of sack

I was born with a plastic spoon in my mouth
The north side of my town faced east, and the east was facing south
And now you dare to look me in the eye
Those crocodile tears are what you cry
It's a genuine problem, you won't try
To work it out at all you just pass it by, pass it by

(Substitute) me for him
(Substitute) my coke for gin
(Substitute) you for my mum
(Substitute) at least I'll get my washing done

I'm a substitute for another guy
I look pretty tall but my heels are high
The simple things you see are all complicated
I look pretty young, but I'm just back-dated, yeah

TIMELESS.

The drum fill and Entwistle’s slide into his bass solo is one of the great moments in rock. And such a heavy song is arguably driven by Pete’s acoustic…

The Stones and The Beatles knew the new kids on the block were serious!!!

Plenty of academics have written about imposter syndrome, but none as succinctly or as powerfully as the Who.
