Archie Shepp - Poem For Malcolm Blasé

Review by Andrew Wildey

Archie Shepp's album "Poem For Malcolm Blasé" is a masterpiece that showcases the saxophonist's incredible talent and creativity. The album is a tribute to Malcolm X, and Shepp's music reflects the passion, anger, and hope that characterized Malcolm's life and legacy.

The album features a range of styles, from the soulful blues of "Blues for Brother George Jackson" to the frenetic energy of "Hooray for Malcolm," which features Shepp's explosive saxophone playing. The album also includes spoken-word pieces that capture the spirit of Malcolm's speeches and writings.

Throughout the album, Shepp's saxophone playing is bold and powerful, conveying a sense of urgency and conviction that is truly inspiring. His band, which includes some of the best jazz musicians of the time, is equally impressive, providing a rich and dynamic backdrop for Shepp's playing.

My all time favorite Shepp album for decades now. Jeanie Lee should have a Grammy award for her incantations. And, of course, it goes without saying that Shepp deserves more than several, plus a life time achievement award. Stunning to hear this album EVERY time.
