The Gary Burton Quartet's Live In Tokyo is a stunning display of virtuosity and improvisational prowess. Recorded in 1971 during the group's tour of Japan, the album captures the quartet at the height of their creative powers.
Burton's vibraphone playing is nothing short of mesmerizing, as he weaves intricate melodies and harmonies with effortless ease. His backing band, consisting of guitarist Jerry Hahn, bassist Steve Swallow, and drummer Bill Goodwin, provide a solid foundation for Burton's flights of fancy.

I love this playing, it’s a fast tempo, which means I continue to listen. I’ve always been fascinated by Sam Brown’s playing in various contexts, even on nylon string guitar.

The first outing for this tune was in 1969 on Country Roads and Other Places, an album so poised, so balanced that it it sounds as fresh now as it did then. That note bending! On this live version, my feeling is that Sam Brown misjudged the concept with his solo. Luckily it doesn't last long.

A great tune. I saw Gary Burton play this after being thoroughly and riotously upstaged by Chris McGregor's first London big band (masterpiece of mis-programming). It reset the mood beautifully for the rest of his set.
