Hank Jones - For My Father

For My Father is a wonderful album by the legendary jazz pianist Hank Jones. Released in 1980, the album features Jones paying tribute to his father, who was also a pianist. The album is a beautiful collection of jazz standards, including "My Funny Valentine," "Stella by Starlight," and "Body and Soul."
Jones' playing on this album is impeccable. He has a light touch and a beautiful sense of phrasing that makes every note count. His solos are tasteful and never over-the-top, and he has a great sense of rhythm that keeps the music moving forward. The rest of the band is also fantastic, with George Duvivier on bass and Ben Riley on drums providing a solid foundation for Jones' playing.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "We'll Be Together Again," which features Jones playing a beautiful solo piano rendition of the song. It's a hauntingly beautiful performance that showcases Jones' incredible talent.

He was part of an in-demand rhythm section in New York City for years which was hired for hundreds (if not thousands) of diverse gigs, which included , and .
He received the NEA Jazz Masters Award and was also honored with the ASCAP Jazz Living Legend Award and the National Medal of Arts.

Je suis un fan du pianiste Hank Jones (1918-2010), un veteran qui a parcouru l'histoire du jazz des annees 40 a la premiere decennie du XXIe siecle. Ce disque est excellent, plein de finesse et de tendresse par un tres grand pianiste. Ce disque est surtout l'occasion, pour moi, de decouvrir un batteur largement sous-estime et pourtant tres chevronne: Dennis Mackrel. Il a pris la succession du batteur Mel Lewis a la tete de son big-band. Dans ce CD, son jeu se marie parfaitement a l'interpretation de Hank Jones (On peut ecouter Dennis Mackrel sur par exemple Inside Out) . Je le definirai comme un batteur qui allie delicatesse et fermete de tempo. Son jeu de cymbales est tres melodieux et tous ses petits solos sont de veritables regals. Ce n'est pas de la batterie spectacle, mais melodique. Le soutien de George Mraz a la contrebasse est egal a lui-meme, impeccable. Un disque qui s'ecoute et se reecoute pour en apprecier toutes les subtilites. Un tres bon disque de jazz a recommander dans l'abondante discographie de Hank Jones.
