Jim Hall Trio - Live In Tokyo

Review by Maximiliano Cunha

Live In Tokyo by Jim Hall Trio is a stunning album that showcases the brilliance of the legendary jazz guitarist. The album captures the trio's live performance at the Tokyo Metropolitan Festival Hall in 1976, and the energy and virtuosity of the musicians are palpable throughout.

The album opens with the upbeat and groovy "Autumn Leaves," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. Jim Hall's guitar playing is fluid and effortless, and his solos are both melodic and inventive. Bassist Don Thompson and drummer Terry Clarke provide a solid and dynamic rhythm section, adding depth and texture to the music.

The trio's rendition of "St. Thomas" is a highlight of the album, with Hall's guitar dancing over the infectious Caribbean rhythm. The trio's chemistry is evident in their playful and spontaneous interactions, and their joy in playing together is contagious.

The album also features several original compositions by Hall, including the hauntingly beautiful "All Across the City." The trio's sensitive and nuanced approach to these pieces is a testament to their musical sensitivity and artistry.

The greatest master of melody in jazz guitar. No one could touch him on that department, not even Django, Wes Montgomery or Johnny Smith

I miss this man. He did a workshop at the blue note in NYC and he was so genuine and direct.

There is a mistake on the Joaquín Rodrigo's composition. It's called Concierto de Aranjuez, which was conceived when he and his wife were living in that precious town near Madrid called Aranjuez, at that time the couple did lost a child, and Joaquín because that decided to create this master composition for guitar and was Regino Sainz de la Maza the firts guitar player who played it (this occurs in Barcelona).

Ciao Jim.

I am an avid lover of joe pass who I think is the best ever but I also like Jim hall jack Wilkins and grant green form a virtuosity stand point joe is the man but Jim jack and grant seem to take me in a journey I have never been on each time I listen to them where as joe just makes me laugh because I am never gonna play like him and I been playing guitar for 30 plus years

Great Jim! I have always loved his approach to this instrument. Perhaps he is not a composer but his improvisation on classic song is super! In my opinion......

We clearly hear a lot of Pat Metheny, Allan Holdsworth and John McLaughlin in his playing. They have listened a lot to Jim.

Jim Hall always had some of the best phrasing and tone of all jazz guitarists in my opinion
