Review by Amy Do

The album "What Good Would It Be The Masquerade Is Over" by Jimmy Scott is a soulful and emotional journey that showcases the legendary jazz vocalist's incredible range and depth of feeling. From the opening track "There Will Never Be Another You" to the closing number "The Masquerade Is Over," Scott's vocals are powerful and poignant, conveying a sense of longing, loss, and hope.

The album features a mix of classic jazz standards and lesser-known gems, all of which are given new life through Scott's stunning interpretations. Highlights include "I'm Through With Love," which is delivered with a raw and honest intensity, and "Imagination," which showcases Scott's ability to convey complex emotions with just a few carefully chosen words.

Throughout the album, Scott is backed by a talented group of musicians who provide subtle and sophisticated arrangements that perfectly complement his vocals. The result is a timeless and deeply moving work of art that will appeal to fans of jazz, soul, and R&B.

American jazz vocalist (born July 17, 1925, Cleveland, Ohio, USA - died June 12, 2014, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA) also known as "Little" Jimmy Scott. He became famous for his unusually high contralto voice, which was due to Kallmann's syndrome, a very rare genetic condition. The condition stunted his growth at four feet eleven inches until, at the age of 37, he grew another eight inches to the height of five feet seven inches. The condition prevented him from reaching puberty, leaving him with a high, undeveloped voice. The singer's big break came in 1949, when hired him on the recommendation of and billed him as "Little Jimmy Scott" and had a hit with "Everybody's Somebody's Fool". This song and three others recorded with the Hampton orchestra, along with early 1950's solo sides for the and labels, were reissued in 1999 on the CD "Everybody's Somebody's Fool". Also released that year was the three-CD "The Savoy Years and More" containing his 1952 recordings for Records and his 1955-75 output for .

Wow! A Jimmy Scott recording that actually moves along. Not upbeat, mind you. But, it's quite listenable. And the orchestration, along with Rudy Van Gelder's engineering, is also top-notch.

This man has beautiful voice and brilliant interpretation that few could match. I never really liked Nancy Wilson's voice (but she’s okay), because there was always something missing. Then I heard Jimmy and realized SHE copied off of him as so many others; yet, his style is more versatile. I was not born back then either. He is one of my favorite male singers along with Sam Cooke, Johnny Mathis and Nate Cole.

"Possibly." A version of any song by Jimmy Scott is always near the top, but this one I think belongs to Nancy Wilson.

Who would have thought - one word, one look, would take me not just from a Packard stained with tears but a nod at the last cigarette I'd ever smoke. It wasn't her, you see. It was me - dumb, in love, and targeted. A shiny night, rain was just tinsel, we had it great - but it wasn't 'we', see? I fell for it all the way. And an acre of car hood, one gorgeous woman, and being right ain't gonna get you anywhere but dead. The game was rigged from the start, course, but I fell for it anyway...

Wow - that is a beautiful strong version by the master. Thanks for sharing. Now if only somebody would put up his rare King sides.

Wish there was a vocal male quartet on some of these LJS recordings!  Not a chorus.  Like the Four Buddies!  HAD to have influenced Frankie Lymon!
