KEN mode - Venerable

Review by Shawn Boswell

Venerable, the fourth album by Canadian noise rock band KEN mode, is a blistering and uncompromising collection of songs that showcase the band's raw power and intensity. From the opening track "Book of Muscle" to the closing song "Never Was", KEN mode delivers a relentless assault of heavy riffs, thunderous drums, and anguished vocals that will leave listeners breathless.

The band's sound on Venerable is a potent blend of punk, metal, and noise rock, with elements of sludge and hardcore thrown in for good measure. The songs are built around crushing guitar riffs and pounding rhythms, with occasional moments of atmospheric tension and release. The lyrics are equally intense, exploring themes of personal struggle, existential despair, and social critique.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Batholith", which features guest vocals from legendary noise rock pioneer Steve Albini. Albini's distinctive voice adds an extra layer of grit and intensity to the song, which is already one of the most powerful on the album. Other highlights include "The Promises of God", a searing indictment of religious hypocrisy, and "A Wicked Pike", a relentless barrage of distorted guitars and pummeling drums.

The band's 2011 album, Venerable, is a Drop B-tuned rehash of their previous two.

The best show I ever went to was when these guys were touring for this record and opened for Ringworm in this dark cramped bar during SXSW. They went from a dead silence into 'Obeying the Iron Will' and I felt like I got hit in the chest with a sledgehammer. I was so blown away a three piece could make such a brutally full sound, and this still remains one of my all time favorite records.
