Review by Megan Wine

The Complete Live At Plugged Nickel 1965 by Miles Davis is an exceptional jazz album that showcases the legendary musician's prowess on the trumpet. The album features five sets of live performances recorded over two consecutive nights at the Plugged Nickel club in Chicago in December 1965.

The album captures Davis and his quintet at the peak of their creative powers, delivering a series of improvisational masterpieces that are a testament to their musical genius. The sound quality of the recordings is excellent, and the listener feels as if they are right there in the club, experiencing the music in real-time.

The album features classic tracks such as "All of You," "If I Were a Bell," and "My Funny Valentine," which showcase Davis's unique style and his ability to create beautiful, melodic lines that are both emotive and technically impressive. The other members of the quintet, including Wayne Shorter on saxophone and Herbie Hancock on piano, also deliver exceptional performances that complement Davis's playing perfectly.

Audio definition and mix are nicer than the Columbia Complete Plugged Nickel release! Ron Carter is coming through very nicely on this one, much more present. Or am I imagining it?

I had the complete live at the Plugged Nickel recordings, with all the weird background noises; the till being opened, glasses on the bar, stools being dragged. Every minute of these recordings are gold are they not? Imagine such a line-up as these 5. Who wouldn`t give a limb to have been at one of these nights? Thanks for posting. It`s music like this that reminds me i`m human.

There was no one like Miles in the way he played and it sounded amazing. Is that not as close as you can get to greatness in terms of objective criteria?

Herbie says in his book that the band had become (too) comfortable playing together so Tony Williams told them to play everything opposite to what they thought was expected of them.

Despite the impressive line-up this doesn't work for me. The band sound like they don't know the songs and are not sure what to do so they leave it all on Miles. This might be somewhat the fault of the recording/mix which sounds like a loud trumpet with a barely audible rhythm section and no other support. Miles is a big favorite of mine but his band was not on point every night, some nights they were plain tired out. I won't give this a thumb's down but I cannot give it a thumbs up either.

A novel could be written about just Tony Williams' right hand. I used to have the Mosaic box sets. Sublime.

Love Tony's subtle playing here. To me it completely caresses the music, yet is very interesting drumming. Kind of catching both worlds of being very supportive yet extremely creative.

Certains veulent changer le monde, Miles Davis. Changea la musique, plusieurs fois , pas si mal?

awesome, when these CDs came out back some 25 years ago, I played them for a year straight in my car.....I had one of those 6 CD changers and loaded it up with the quintet and did not change it for over a year...love Miles, stumbled across him as a hippie kid, went to see Leon Russell at the Fillmore West and Miles was the opener, changed me forever
