The Realistics are the great lost band of the NYC rock renaissance that spawned mainstays like The Strokes, YYYs and Interpol. It's unfortunate that so little of their fire was documented in recorded form. Real People showcases some earlier efforts dating back to '98/'99. Songs like Four Letter Word For, Digital Brigade and Comedy of Error are epic little Indie Pop nuggets packed with elastic, melodic driven bass lines, colorful keyboards, vocal harmonies and smart arrangements. Perhaps no track hits this nail on the head better than Apartment Two with it's notable MBV/Colin Newman-esque verses. Rockers like Monotony and Turning Around give the Attractions a run for their money while the soulful Should've Known surprises with a commanding vocal performance that manages to marry both Prince and Beck. Fans of Elvis Costello's early output, The Jam, dB's, Blondie, Supergrass, Soft Boys and XTC should find something here.
