About Robert Wyatt
Born: Robert Wyatt, January 28, 1945 in Bristol, England to Honor Wyatt a teacher and BBC journalist, and George Ellidge, an industrial psychologist married at that time to another woman. Robert Wyatt became Robert Ellidge when his father and mother could finally marry in 1951. In the Summer of 1964 Wyatt co-founded . Wyatt then co-founded in the Summer of 1966. Soft Machine gained a strong 'cult' following on the London 'psychedelic underground' music scene, sharing club billings with bands such as and . In January 1967, Soft Machine's first single release was recorded ("Love Makes Sweet Music" b/w "Feelin' Reelin' Squeelin'").
In February 1968, Soft Machine embarked on a three-month American tour (opening for the Jimi Hendrix Experience), recording their first album during their touring schedule in New York over four days in April. The band split up in December 1968, re-formed in February 1969 and carried on until the late 1970's through many line-up changes and leaving no original member on board. It re-formed briefly in 1980 and 1984.
Shortly after recording the third Soft Machine album, Wyatt released his first solo album, . He suffered an injury in June 1973 which left him paralyzed from the waist down. Wyatt's second solo effort, , was recorded three months after he was released from hospital in 1974 with the aid of Pink Floyd's Manor Mobile and as producer. Wyatt has continued to record and perform despite being confined to a wheelchair.

Just a shame it was about such a shitty little war. This song was too good for that war. Or war in general, It seems to be saying something far more profound than just being an anti-war song. Something about the sadness of life in general, how things just keep spinning round again and again without any hope of resolution, which war is just a part.

The definitive version of this song but also checkout the versions by June Tabor, and by the Unthanks.

Is it worth it?
A new winter coat and shoes for the wife
And a bicycle on the boy's birthday.
It's just a rumor that was spread around town
By the women and children, soon we'll be shipbuilding
Well I ask you
The boy said 'Dad, they're going to take me to task
But I'll be home by Christmas.
It's just a rumor that was spread around town
Somebody said that someone got filled in
For saying that people get killed in
The results of their shipbuilding.
With all the will in the world
Diving for dear life
When we could be diving for pearls.
It's just a rumor that was spread around town
A telegram for a picture postcard
Within weeks they'll be reopening the shipyard
And notifying the next of kin
Once again.
It's all we're skilled in
We will be shipbuilding.
With all the will in the world
Diving for dear life
When we could be diving for pearls.
A new winter coat and shoes for the wife
And a bicycle on the boy's birthday.
It's just a rumor that was spread around town

British liberals would happliy have given up British citizens to a vicious military dictatorship. I did not like Thatcher but she was right on this one.

The best political songs are the ones that draw you in without feeling overtly political or preachy. This is the ultimate example of how to pull it off. Superb.

I love the way he sings this without any American accent and an unaffected voice.
I immediately imagined him singing this as a worker at the shipyards.
I love Elvis Costello’s version because it has a stunning jazz trumpet solo played by Chet Baker but I don’t know whether to give credit to Costello or Wyatt for originally writing this beautiful song.
Google tells me Costello wrote the lyrics with Clive Langer in 82 and another scourge tells me Langer originally wrote the song for Robert Wyatt?
Can anyone throw any light on this for me please?
