Velma - Ludwig

Review by Robin Hoffman

Velma's latest album, Ludwig, is a masterpiece of experimental electronic music. The French duo, consisting of musicians Laurent Girard and Cyril Secq, have created a unique sound that blends elements of ambient, glitch, and post-rock into a cohesive and mesmerizing whole.

From the opening track, "Ludwig's Dream," the listener is transported into a dreamlike world of swirling synths and pulsing rhythms. The album's title track, "Ludwig II," is a haunting tribute to the infamous Bavarian king, with its mournful piano melody and ethereal vocals.

Other standout tracks include "Egon Schiele," with its glitchy beats and distorted vocals, and "The Great Silence," a brooding meditation on the mysteries of the universe.

Throughout the album, Velma's mastery of sound design and production is evident. The duo's use of unconventional instruments, such as bowed guitar and prepared piano, adds a sense of organic warmth to the otherwise icy electronic textures.

About Velma

Velma challenge the codes of the artistic genres in their quest for new forms of performance. Emerged from rock and electronic music clubs where Velma still surprises the audience, Christian Garcia, Christophe Jaquet and Stephane Vecchione have been creating musical performances since 1999. They have developped a unique style of projecting music into the very heart of the dramatical set up. Velma offers music a new space, a space in which music is not at the service of the story, simple effect or decoration but where everything serves music. To open up towards theatre the three artists have worked together with dancers, actors, performers and VJs. Their first concert-performances Cyclique I&II (1999, 2000) and Applique (2000) surprised and fascinated the audience of that time.
