Review by bro lori

Author Author by Dave Grusin and Johnny Mandel is a collaborative album that features the two Grammy-winning composers’ incredible skills. The album contains a mix of jazz and classical music, and each track has its unique style and arrangement.

The album opens with “The Quiet Place,” a beautiful and calming piece that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The track features a serene piano melody accompanied by strings and woodwinds. The album takes a jazzy turn with the second track, “She Could Be Mine,” which features a lively saxophone solo and syncopated beats.

One of the standout tracks on the album is “The Goodbye Look,” which features a hauntingly beautiful piano melody accompanied by a full orchestra. The track captures the emotions of saying farewell perfectly and is sure to tug at listeners' heartstrings.

Another standout track is “Out Of The Shadows,” which features a jazzy saxophone solo and a catchy bassline. The track is upbeat and energetic, and it’s impossible not to tap your feet along to the rhythm.

Can never go wrong with Michael Franks as far as I'm concerned lol. Loved a lot of his songs and this song was quintissential early 80's. I was into this movie as a kid too.

Oh man, I remember watching this movie, or the the first five minutes of it anyhow. It was ‘88 and I was invited over a house that a friend of a friend was looking after while the people that owned the house were away on holiday. It was a large house as I remember; we played pool, drank endless bottles of coca-cola, and sat around watching movies that this family’d recorded on VHS cassette. They had tons of them, all stacked down the hallway and gathering dust. I’d always been told by my parents to stack VHS cassettes vertically, like a bookcase, but these people stacked them on top of one another which meant it was difficult to get a movie from the bottom. Anyway, we watched a number of films: Terminator, Star Wars, Nightmare on Elm St, this and that. I saw written on one of the cassettes- ‘Author!Author! Al Pacino’ - in blue biro, and suggested we give the movie a try cause I’d liked Al Pacino in The Godfather. Everyone agreed so we got some more bottles of coca-cola (I don’t know, but alcohol wasn’t cool to this crowd), and settled down to watch this Pacino film though changed our minds five minutes into it. I never got to see the
at movie, but 30 yrs later I still remember that night in that house, and how we drank coke and the theme song - Milk & Cookies -still plays in my head. (UPDATE AND EDIT TO MILK & COOKIES MESSAGE) - Hi, it’s me again everyone, the guy that remembered the theme song to Author! Author! I just wanted to add that it was also that night I got food poisoning and ended up throwing up the coca-cola I’d been drinking all night down the toilet. The next day was rough, worse than a badgers ass. I can’t remember who the guy who invited us over to the house was, but we were obviously taking advantage of having a free place to hang out in, even though there were no individuals of the female persuasion and no alcohol to jazz it up. When you’re 17 going on 67 those kind of things are important. Anyway, Joe Parkinson (a friend who hadn’t been invited), turned up out of the blue around ten o clock, shortly after us watching the first five minutes of Author! Author! He must’ve heard we were hanging out there and wanted to get in on the whole act. We heard him knocking @ the door and me and this other boy went and hid under one of the beds. I remember the excitement of hiding under the bed and feeling I was being a rebel. Anyway, that’s all for now folks.
PS, I tell a lie when I say I never got to watch Author! Author! as it was shown on tv sometime in the 90’s, and I ended up buying a second-hand copy of it on cassette from a market in Kingston-upon Thames in Surrey (the old vhs stall with the guy with the black moustache who was a bit of a snob about the films he sold, at least that’s the impression I always got from him. I remember buying the film ‘Brimestone and Treacle’ from him once and saying the character played by Sting wasn’t the Devil but just an opportunist. He’d given me a look like he was about to piss on me from a lofty height. Still, I miss those days in Kingston as they weren’t that long after I broke up with Sam Cosgrove, the only girl I loved) - though have subsequently thrown all my VHS cassettes away with the advent of DVD. That’s all for now folks. If I remember anything else about that night at the house I’ll be sure to let you know. Caio.

Here, here! This is my favorite Pacino film, as it still brings back many fond memories of my childhood. I remember seeing it in real time on WHT (Wometco Home Theatre) in NYC. The song is equally memorable. I managed to obtain a limited copy of the CD Soundtrack, and "Coming Home To You Is Like Coming To Milk & Cookies" by Michael Franks was intentionally omitted from the release. Instead, an instrumental version by Dave Grusin was included. The liner notes by Julie Kirgo mentions the following (excerpt): "And even Grusin was subjected to last-minute changes: his Main Title Theme (1M1), heard here before the pause as the first half of Track 1) was precipitously replaced by a song, the egregiously titled "Comin' Home To You (Is Like Comin' Home To Milk & Cookies)," for which the ordinarily witty and sophisticated Alan & Marilyn Bergman supplied the lyrics. That tune, nominated for a Razzie Award for Worst Original Song, is not available on this disc, for which we may all (and the Bergmans, in particular) give thanks." LOL! Can you believe this?eh I can site a handful of songs from The Beatles & Zep, et al that were lacking in terms of lyrical prolificacy. Not every song has to change the world.
