Dumb Numbers - Goodbye Charlie

Review by Michael Bastia

Goodbye Charlie, the latest album by Dumb Numbers, is a powerful and dynamic collection of songs that showcase the band's unique blend of heavy rock, grunge, and experimental noise. Led by Australian musician Adam Harding, Dumb Numbers have created an album that is both atmospheric and visceral, with each track offering a different sonic journey.

The album's opening track, "Unbury the Hatchet," sets the tone with its brooding, distorted guitars and haunting vocals. Other standout tracks include "The Broken Promised Land," with its driving rhythm and catchy hooks, and "Last Night I Had a Dream," which features a stunning vocal performance by guest singer Lou Barlow.

Throughout the album, Dumb Numbers demonstrate their ability to seamlessly blend different genres and create a sound that is both familiar and fresh. The production is raw and gritty, adding to the album's overall intensity.

About Dumb Numbers

The musical vehicle for singer/songwriter and videographer Adam Harding, Dumb Numbers make sludgy, expansive indie rock. A native of Australia, Harding spent many years in Los Angeles where he directed music videos for such bands as Best Coast, DJ Shadow, Sebadoh, Swervedriver and Warpaint. Working with a handful of Los Angeles-based musicians including Sebadohs Lou Barlow, Best Coasts Bobb Bruno, Dinosaur Jr. drummer Murph, and Melvins drummer Dale Crover, Harding crafted Dumb Numbers' idiosyncratic mix of moody, guitar-based music that touches upon noise, drone, shoegaze, and other styles of rock. In 2013, Dumb Numbers released their debut full-length, self-titled album on Joyful Noise Recordings, featuring photography by David Lynch. The same year, Dumb Numbers toured North America with My Bloody Valentine, and also supported The Lemonheads and Sebadoh. In 2015, Dumb Numbers released an ambitious triple 10 box set featuring collaborations with David Lynch, Melvins, and David Yow from The Jesus Lizard. In 2016, Dumb Numbers returned with their second full-length album, featuring David Yow on guest vocals. In 2017, Dumb Numbers released the Stranger EP, presenting very slow, cinematic reinterpretations of songs from the first two full-length albums, with Dale Crover on drums, and Thor Harris from Swans on tubular bells, gongs and additional percussion. A second Melvins collaboration, once again featuring Dale Crover on drums and King Buzzo on guitar and vocals, was released in 2022 as a limited edition saw-blade shaped 12" vinyl EP called Broken Pipe.
