Alan Killen, Frankie Laine signed with Atlas in June of 1945. Bel-Tone became a company in the summer of 1945 and didn't list Frankie's recording until September 1945. Atlas's Frankie Laine record was released before Bel-Tone's Frankie Laine in September. The Bel-Tone recordings with the S matrix numbers were done in 1944 before Bel-Tone became a company. It wasn't released however until after they became a company. This record is possibly Bel-Tone's first record ever.

Alan Killen, first of all you are mistaken about the S-0256 label. Obviously you've never seen it. There were only two recordings in the S matrix numbers for Bel-Tone. Those were S-0255 and S-0256 and they were both on the same album. The S-0256 is Wini Beatty "You're A Character, Dear". The A matrix numbers were started when Bel-Tone became a company in 1945. These two recordings were done in 1944 as stated by Frankie Laine in an interview. Nobody has seen the S-0256 label (as stated by Clemson University) except the owner of this record and myself.

I'm still trying to get these early recordings + the 'ORIGIN' album. He was the best male jazz singer for me. I do have his MERCURY years with his writing pal Carl (WE'LL BE TOGETHER AGAIN,IT ONLY HAPPENS ONCE ETC.) FISCHER.that Cowboy stuff is not for me though he does a good job. I have country music from the 50's thats my real country music for me. Where do I get early FRANKIE LAINE DAMMIT !!!

Sorry to disagree … but “Small Hours” was not FL's first recording for Bel-Tone as claimed here. That distinction falls to “Brother, That's Liberty” … by virtue of its matrix number (1A-2324) … as opposed to that of “Small Hours” (1A-2327). According to Bel-Tone's first advert in Billboard (Aug 11, 1945) both FL tracks were scheduled for release on Aug 15th on S-0255 … with S-0256 ear-marked for the Wini Beatty/Gene Sargent sides … and repeated in their second advert of Sept 1st, 1945. However, it would seem that someone realised that by issuing the FL sides separately they would sell two discs rather than one! And so, “Small Hours” ended up as S-0255 .. with “Brother,That's Liberty” as S-0256. So, “Small Hours” first by Catalogue Release Number … but not by recording chronology. After Bel-Tone folded, Gold Seal acquired both tracks and issued them back-to-back on GS 7262 in 1948. However, they appear to have dispensed with the word “Brother” from the title
FL's first released recording was by Atlas a month earlier; “Melancholy Madeline” was advertised in Billboard's July 14, 1945 issue as “something to shout about” featuring Oscar Moore with “The Three Blazers” (on OM 107). I have a recording of FL stating that “Madeline” was his first disc ever issued.
