My father took me to this concert when I was five years old. I always wondered why. I think I fell asleep. Listening now with 71 year old ears I understand why he wanted to share the genius of Louis Armstrong with me. Thanks, Dad.

Almost always during this period, during which Pops performed regularly with the All Stars, there would, on any given night, be several phrases, entire choruses, or even just a few licks that were just startling in their freshness, their sheer inventiveness. This concert belongs to the qualifier "almost" always. Pops NEVER coasted but he does sound a little tired here. The best performance is the beautifully heartfelt one on the straight melody of "You'll Never Walk Alone".
