Robyn Hitchcock - Black Snake Diamond Röle

Review by Victoria Piedrahita

Black Snake Diamond Röle is the debut album from British singer-songwriter Robyn Hitchcock. Released in 1981, the album features a mix of psychedelic rock and folk-inspired tunes that showcase Hitchcock's unique style and lyrical prowess.

The album opens with the catchy and upbeat "The Man Who Invented Himself," which sets the tone for the rest of the record. Hitchcock's distinct voice and clever wordplay are on full display throughout the album, particularly on tracks like "Do Policemen Sing?" and "The Lizard."

The standout track on the album is undoubtedly "Acid Bird," a haunting and atmospheric ballad that showcases Hitchcock's ability to create vivid and evocative imagery through his lyrics. The song's slow build and eerie instrumentation make it a standout moment on the album.

Hitchcock's first solo release was the vehicle by which he could continue the power of the Soft Boys but expand on his pop sensibilities and gravitas toward psychedelia. At the same time, he could show his ability to create slower, beautiful songs like "Love" as a natural growth within his repertoire. While his output would mutate over the years between electric and acoustic, Black Snake Diamond Role was indeed the blueprint for the musicality and lyrical wit and creativity that Robyn Hitchcock would display throughout his career.

Robyn Hitchcock's voice let me think a little bit of Bob dylan one, very close by moments.
