Review by Emily Dockrill Jones

The album "Lieder" by Schubert Mahler Jessye Norman Irwin Gage is a wonderful collection of songs that showcases the exceptional talent of the artists involved. The album features a selection of lieder by Franz Schubert and Gustav Mahler, sung by the legendary soprano Jessye Norman and accompanied by pianist Irwin Gage.

The performances on this album are nothing short of breathtaking. Jessye Norman's powerful and expressive voice is perfectly suited to the emotional depth and complexity of these songs, and she delivers each one with incredible passion and nuance. Irwin Gage's piano accompaniment is equally impressive, providing a rich and nuanced backdrop to Norman's vocals.

One of the standout tracks on the album is Schubert's "Gretchen am Spinnrade," a hauntingly beautiful song that tells the story of a young woman spinning wool and pining for her lover. Norman's interpretation of the piece is nothing short of stunning, capturing the longing and desperation of the protagonist with incredible depth and sensitivity.
