Jimmy Forrest - Night Train

Review by Omer Yesilyurt

Night Train by Jimmy Forrest is a classic jazz album that showcases the saxophonist's impressive skills and musicality. Released in 1961, the album features a mix of original compositions and covers, all of which are performed with a high level of energy and passion.

Forrest's playing is particularly noteworthy, with his smooth and soulful tone shining through on tracks like "Night Train" and "Soul Street." His improvisational skills are also on full display, as he takes extended solos that are both technically impressive and emotionally expressive.

The backing band, which includes pianist Harold Mabern and drummer Elvin Jones, is equally impressive. They provide a solid foundation for Forrest's playing, while also adding their own creative flourishes and accents.

Jimmy Forrest is an authentic music genius for the composition of Night Train because he drags the listener directly next to the train, while he snorts and runs without ever stopping, if not at his destination. This is a favorite song for me since my then fiancé and I danced to it in 1956 at our engagement party but I no longer have the recording. How do I download just the audio from youtube?  I love that someone still has it. Thank you. mtreihart@aol.com

The favorite song of defensive back Dick "Night Train" Lane. In 2009, a film produced by the NFL ranked Lane No. 2 on its list (behind Dick Butkus) of the most feared tacklers in league history. The film also credited Lane's practices with the prohibition of clothesline tackles. Lane also happens to be the last husband of jazz singer Dinah Washington.

Did you flip the stylus to the 78 side? Sounds like the needle is digging at the bottom of the groove, which an LP stylus would do because .7 mils is too thin for 78s. A 3 mil stylus (the 78 side) shouldn't bottom out, and it should hopefully sound cleaner. Just sayin'. I had a really clean copy of this record and broke it. (D'oh!) I'll never get over it!
